Using The Phrase,”Go to Hell!”

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

الحمد لله و الصلاة و السلام على رسول الله و على آله و أصحابه أجمعين. أما بعد:

Is it permissible to use the phrase ‘Go to hell!’ which in colloquial usage in English means ‘Get lost!’, or is used to express anger and/or frustration to another Muslim?

Answer.

1) A Muslim must watch over his words whenever he speaks, if his speech is not beneficial he should remain silent.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or else keep silent …”

2)A Muslim wishes only good for his fellow Muslim. Hence saying go to hell to a Muslim is the worst thing that can be said to any muslim.

Jundab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A man said: By Allah, Allah will not forgive this person! Allah Almighty said: Who is he who swore by me that I will not forgive someone? I have forgiven him and nullified your good deeds.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2621)

3)If someone says that, I’ just wanted to show disgust and anger but didn’t really mean it that way’, we tell him that abusing a Muslim is not allowed.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Insulting a Muslim is an evil action (Fisq) and fighting him is disbelief (Kufr).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari (48) and Muslim (64).)

4) Can a careless word or phrase like ‘go to hell’ take one into the hell fire?

Yes, sometimes a careless word can destroy our Akhirah.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet; said, “A slave (of Allah) may utter a word which pleases Allah without giving it much importance, and because of that Allah will raise him to degrees (of reward): a slave (of Allah) may utter a word (carelessly) which displeases Allah without thinking of its gravity and because of that he will be thrown into the Hell-Fire.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari 6478)

5) It is from the qualities of a Munafiq (double faced hypocrite) to use abusive/foul language during an argument.

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr that the Prophet ﷺ said: “There are four characteristics, whoever has them all is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has one of the characteristics of hypocrisy, until he gives it up: when he is entrusted with something he betrays that trust, when he speaks he lies, when he makes a covenant he breaks it, and when he disputes he resorts to foul language.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari (54) and Muslim (58).)

Conclusion: Thus it is not permissible to use the phrase ‘Go to hell!’ for another Muslim.
