Criticizing Oppressed Muslims When They’re In A State Of War- Shaikh Faisal bin Qazar Al-Jaasim

Shaikh Faisal bin Qazar Al-Jaasim (from Kuwait) said on his Twitter account (@faisalaljasem)

It was never known of any reliable scholar (‘Aalim) ever, either from the scholars of the past or from the contemporaries, that they used their tongues to critique the Muslims at a time when they were at war with a disbelieving enemy and were being overpowered (by the enemy), regardless of the reason for the war between them, and regardless of the condition of those Muslims, being followers of the Sunnah or followers of Bid’ah.

Because the (current) situation demands support (for the oppressed Muslims), steadfastness, and repelling the enemy, and it is what is the actual obligation now.

When the ruler of Syria launched his campaign against the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwanul-Muslimeen), accusing them of trying to overthrow the government, Shaikh Ibn Baaz sent a message calling on the Muslims to aid and support them. The shaikh did not direct his speech to the (refutation of) the Muslim Brotherhood, blaming them for provoking the ruler of Syria or planning to overthrow the ruler despite their weakness, the ruler’s strength and control over them, and he (Ibn Baaz) did not concern himself with criticizing their Manhaj (methodology) and ideology. Because the situation necessitated supporting the oppressed against the aggressive disbeliever (the ruler of Syria).

So how should it be when the aggressive disbelieving enemy usurps the lands of the Muslims, violates their honour, plunders their resources? It becomes obligatory to defend them and strive for it. Allah has mentioned their (The Jews’) treachery and betrayal in His book. Can any sensible person doubt the necessity that the speech during times of war must be a speech in support of the Muslims, encouraging and mobilizing them with the sword, wealth, and assistance?

In reality, in this case only one of the three people criticize the Muslims:

(1) A Jahil (ignorant one), or (2) An Ahmaq (fool) without a mind, or (3) a hired mercenary who seeks to fulfill the desired of his masters.

And speech during the times of Fitan (tribulations) and war, is more severe in effect than a sword: Nasheetan or Tathbeetan (It either encourages or discourages).

The application of rulings should be based on what is known and verified, not on mere suspicion or assumption. Unfortunately, some preachers, regrettably, engage in political analyses and construct legal rulings based on them, deviating from the observable and well-known reality. So they abandon the obligation of the current time and the actual circumstances, and they engage in theoretical discussions regarding the obligations of a future that is uncertain and imagined.

And criticism of Jama’at (groups) is not like the criticism of governments.

And Hamas holds a portion of authority in Gaza, being the authority with power there, and possessing a rightful share of guardianship. Hence, criticizing it carries the same weight as criticizing Islamic governments in Muslim countries. It is evident that this would be the most detrimental, repugnant, and detestable situation during times of war with the disbelievers.

The discourse should indeed be directed towards Islamic governments, urging them to fulfill their duty of support and aid based on their genuine capability. However, directing criticism and condemnation towards the oppressed while neglecting to critique the powerful and capable, abandoning what Allah has commanded them to do in support of the oppressed, represents a double standard, a contradiction, favoritism, or duplicity.

And the issue of Palestine stands apart (specially) from other issues concerning Muslims, due to the presence of Masjid Al-Aqsa, the destination of the Isra (night journey) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . Cleansing Al-Aqsa Mosque from the contamination of the Jews represents one of the greatest obligations and most obligatory of the J!had.

Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi wasn’t greatly honoured amongst the Muslims (just because of his military achievements), until he became a true beacon of honesty in the Muslim nation, because of his dedication to purify Jerusalem from the hands of the Christian usurpers, until this action of his became from his best deeds, and the Muslims didn’t rejoice in a manner similar to their rejoicing when Jerusalem was reclaimed (reconquered).

Shaikh Abdul Azeez bin Abdullah bin Baaz was asked: “What is the obligation of a Muslim towards the Muslim fighters in Syria now?” [During the events of Hama in the year 1982 CE.]

He answered:

“What we know about their situation is that they are oppressed, and they deserve help and assistance. The state is brutally killing them, and they have only demanded the rule of Islam, not anything else. The current government is a Kaafir (disbelieving), Alawi, Nusayri, Rafidhi, Batini regime. It is obligatory to support them, and they should endure until they rescue their country from the hands of their unbelieving and atheistic enemy who shows no mercy to the Muslims and has no compassion for them.

In the presence of the speech of the scholars, disregard the words of the ignorant and the fools, as well as the mercenaries (paid agents).

May Allah grant victory to the people of Gaza, strengthen them against their enemies, foil their schemes, thwart their plots, destroy their armies, expose their evil, and preoccupy them with their own affairs. (Dated: 12th October 2023)
