An Anecdote From The Life of Tipu Sultan, His Coronation After His Father’s Death

Tipu Sultan (May Allah have mercy upon him) returned to Srirangapatnam and assumed power over the Kingdom (Sultanat-e-Khudadad, ‘God Given Kingdom’) on 20 Muharram, 1196 AH. Before ascending the throne, he paid his respects to his mother, seeking her blessings. He performed two rak’ahs of prayer, asking Allah for guidance in fulfilling his responsibilities. Upon entering the royal court, he ascended the throne.

The inauguration of the royal court began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. The Qari recited the final Ruku of Surah Al-Hashr. When he reached the verse, “Lo! We have revealed this Scripture…”, Tipu Sultan was overcome with emotion, and tears flowed from his eyes. A profound silence pervaded the assembly for a long time.
