Compilation of Ahadith from Sahih At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb. Part-5

Travelling to seek knowledge.

Hadith 54:

It was narrated that Zirr bin Hubaish said:
“I went to Safwan bin ‘Assal Al-Muradi and he said: ‘What brought you here?’ I said: ‘I am seeking knowledge.’ He said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah say: “There is no one who goes out of his house in order to seek knowledge, but the angels lower their wings in approval of his action.'”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 226, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2682, Sahih.)
Hadith 55:

On the authority of Abu Umamah that the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever leaves in the morning for the Masjid desiring nothing but to learn or to teach, for him is a reward similar to the pilgrim who has completed his Hajj.

Mujam At-Tabrani Al-Kabeer 7473. Hasan Sahih.

Hadith 56:

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘Whoever comes to this mosque of mine, and only comes for a good purpose, such as to learn or to teach, his status is like that of one who fights in Jihad in the cause of Allah. Whoever comes for any other (worldly) purpose, his status is that of a man who is keeping an eye on other people’s property.'”

Sunan ibn Majah 227, Sahih.

Hadith 57:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever goes out seeking knowledge, then he is in Allah’s cause until he returns.”

Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2647, Hasan Li Ghairihi.

The Virtues of spreading Ahadith and not attributing falsehood to the Prophet ﷺ.

Hadith 58:

Narrated Simak bin Hard:
“I heard ‘Abdur-Rahman bin ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud narrating from his father who said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: ‘May Allah gladden a man who hears something from us, so he conveys it as he heard it. Perhaps the one it is conveyed to is more understanding than the one who heard it.'”
Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2657, Hasan Hasan Sahih.

Hadith 59:

It was narrated from Zaid bin Thabit that:
The Messenger of Allah said: “May Allah cause his face to shine, the man who hears what I say and conveys it to others.

There are those who have knowledge but no understanding, and there may be those who convey knowledge to those who have more understanding of it than they do.’ ”

“There are three things because of which hatred does not enter the heart of a Muslim (or There are three with which the heart of a Muslim shall not be deceived) Sincerity in doing an action for the sake of Allah; being sincere towards the rulers of the Muslims; and adhering to the Jama’ah (main body of the Muslims). Because the call is protected from behind them (or Their supplication is answered (i.e. encompassing every good, and all of the people)).

(Imam Al-Mundhiri quoted here from Sahih Ibn Hibban 67, but a similar narration with very minute variation in wordings was reported in Sunan Ibn Majah 230 and 3056 and At-Tirmidhi 2058, and the above text is from Ibn Majah 230).

Hadith 60:

Samurah bin Jundub (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “He who relates from me something which he deems false is one of the liars.”

[Sahih Muslim, 1]

Hadith 61:

Mughirah said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, saying, ‘Indeed a lie upon me is not like a lie upon anyone else, for whoever lies upon me intentionally, then he shall take his seat in the Fire’.’ Sahih Muslim 4a.

Reflections from the Seerah, Saalim’s recitation of The Quraan.

I wanted to share a Hadith with all of you, it really touched my heart, that Ummi Aisha (رضي الله عنها) got late whilst returning home because of listening to the recitation of Saalim (رضي الله عنه) and Nabi ﷺ goes out with Ummi Aisha again and then he praises Allah for creating such people in this Ummah! Now whenever I drink the Zamzam I supplicate: O Allah! Make me recite the Quran like Salim Mawla Abee Hudaifa

It was narrated that ‘Aishah the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“One night at the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) I was late returning from the ‘Isha’, then I came and he said: ‘Where were you?’ I said: ‘I was listening to the recitation of a man among your Companions, for I have never heard a recitation or a voice like his from anyone.’ He got up and I got up with him, to go and listen to him. Then he turned to me and said: ‘This is Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifah. Praise is to Allah Who has created such men among my Ummah.’”

Sunan Ibn Majah 1338. Shaikh Al-Albani said that this narration is Sahih. Imam Ibn Hajr is Hasan in Nataaij Al-Afkar 3/224.

Note: Written below for my reference.

●It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud that:
Abu Bakr and ‘Umar gave him the glad tidings that the Messenger of Allah had said: “Whoever would like to recite the Qur’an as fresh as when it was revealed, let him recite it like Ibn Umm ‘Abd (Abdullah bin Masood).'” (Sunan Ibn Majah 138, Hasan- Imam Muqbil bin Hadi.)

●Anas reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying to Ubayy b. Ka’b:

Allah has commanded me to recite the Qur’an to you. He said: Did Allah mention me to you by name? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Allah made a mention of your name to me. (On hearing this) Ubayy b. Ka’b wept. (Sahih Muslim 799a)

Compilation of Ahadith from Sahih At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb Part-4

Virtue of Ilm and the Ulama.

Hadith 38:

Mu’awiyah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah said, “When Allah wishes good for someone, He bestows upon him the understanding of Deen.”

[Al-Bukhari 71 and Muslim 1037].

Hadith 39:

Mu’awiyah said that the Prophet ﷺ said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا الْعِلْمُ بِالتَّعَلُّمِ وَالْفِقْهُ بِالتَّفَقُّهِ وَمَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ وَإِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ

O people, knowledge only comes by learning and understanding only comes by seeking understanding. For whomever Allah intends good, he gives him understanding of the religion. Verily, only those with knowledge fear Allah among his servants. (35:28)

(al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 929, 395, Hassan Li Ghairihi) (abuaminaelias.com)

Hadith 40:

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard-pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother, and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur’an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him, and he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (high) lineage does not make him go ahead.

Sahih Muslim 2699, Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan Ibn Majah, Sunan At-Tirmidhi.

Hadith 41:

Narrated Kathir ibn Qays:

Kathir ibn Qays said: I was sitting with AbudDarda’ in the mosque of Damascus.

A man came to him and said: AbudDarda, I have come to you from the town of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for a tradition that I have heard you relate from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I have come for no other purpose.

He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man. The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion.

Sunan Abi Dawud 3641, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2682, Sunan Ibn Majah 223.

Hadith 42:

On the authority of Safwan bin ‘Assal Al-Muradi who said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and he was in the Masjid reclining wearing a red cloak, I said to him, ” O Messenger of Allah! I have come here to seek knowledge!” He ﷺ said: Welcome O seeker of knowledge! Verily the Talib-ul-Ilm is covered (and shaded) by the wings of the angels, and they ride (sit) upon each other till they reach the heaven (sky), out of love for that which is being sought (by the student of knowledge).

Musnad Ahmad 4/239, Sahih Ibn Hibban 1322, also see a similar narration in Ibn Majah 226, Hasan.

Hadith 43:

On the authority of Anas who said that the Prophet ﷺ said:

Seven rewardable deeds follow a man and reward him when he is in the grave after his death: (1) Teaching Ilm to someone, (2) digging our a canal, (3) digging a well, (4) planting a (date palm) tree, (5)building a Masjid, (6)made the Mushaf as his inheritance, (7) and left behind him a child who supplicates for his forgiveness after his death.

Musnad Al-Bazzar 149, Abu Nuaym in Al-Hilyah 2/344, Al-Bayhaqi in Shuaib Al-Imaa 3499, Hasan Li Ghairihi.

Hadith 44:

‘Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
There should be no envy but only in case of two persons: one having been endowed with wealth and power to spend it in the cause of Truth, and (the other) who has been endowed with wisdom and he decides cases with the help of it and teaches it (to others).
Sahih Muslim 815, 816. Al-Bukhari 73.
Hadith 45:
Abu Hurairah said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: ‘This world is cursed and what is in it is cursed, except the remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and what is conducive to that, or one who has knowledge or who acquires knowledge.’”
Sunan ibn Majah 4112, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2322, Hasan.

Hadith 46:
Abu Musa reported Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) as saying:
The similitude of that guidance and knowledge with which Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, has sent me is that of rain falling upon the earth. There is a good piece of land which receives the rainfall (eagerly) and as a result of it there is grown in it herbage and grass abundantly. Then there is a land hard and barren which retains water and the people derive benefit from it and they drink it and make the animals drink. Then there is another land which is barren. Neither water is retained in it, nor is the grass grown in it. And that is the similitude of the first one who develops the understanding of the religion of Allah and it becomes a source of benefit to him with which Allah sent me. (The second one is that) who acquires the knowledge of religion and imparts it to others. (Then the other type is) one who does not pay attention to (the revealed knowledge) and thus does not accept guidance of Allah with which I have been sent.
Sahih Muslim 2282, Sahih Al-Bukhari 79.

Hadith 47:
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The rewards of the good deeds that will reach a believer after his death are: Knowledge which he taught and spread; a righteous son whom he leaves behind; a copy of the Qur’an that he leaves as a legacy; a mosque that he built; a house that he built for wayfarers; a canal that he dug; or charity that he gave during his lifetime when he was in good health. These deeds will reach him after his death.'”
Sunan Ibn Majah 242, Al-Bayhaqi in Shuayb Al-Iman 3448, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2490, Hasan.
Hadith 48:
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son, who prays for him (for the deceased).
Sahih Muslim 1631.
Hadith 49:

Sahl bin Mu’adh bin Anas narrated from his father that:
The Prophet said: “Whoever teaches some knowledge will have the reward of the one who acts upon it, without that detracting from his reward in the slightest.”

Sunan ibn Majah 240, Hasan Li Ghairihi.
Hadith 50:
‘Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrated that his father said:
“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The best things that a man can leave behind are three: A righteous son who will pray for him, ongoing charity whose reward will reach him, and knowledge which is acted upon after his death.'”
Sunan ibn Majah 241, Sahih.
Hadith 51:

On the authority of ‘Aisha (who said that the Prophet ﷺ said): The teacher of goodness (Mu’allimul Khair, the one who teaches good), everything seeks forgiveness for him, even the fishes in the ocean.
Musnad Al-Bazzar 133, Saheeh Li Ghairhi.
Hadith 52:

Narrated Abu Umamah Al-Bahili:
“Two men were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). One of them a worshiper, and the other a scholar. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The superiority of the scholar over the worshiper is like my superiority over the least of you.’ Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Indeed Allah, His Angels, the inhabitants of the heavens and the earths – even the ant in his hole, even the fish – say Salat upon the one who teaches the people to do good.'”
Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2685, Hasan Li Ghairhi.
Hadith 53:
On the authority of Anas bin Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ said: Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.

Compilation of Ahadith from Sahih At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb Part-3

Chapters on the importance, position and virtues of The Sunnah.

Hadith 21:

On the authority of Abu Najeeh al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave us a sermon by which our hearts were filled with fear and tears came to our eyes. So we said, “O Messenger of Allah! It is as though this is a farewell sermon, so counsel us.” He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “I counsel you to have taqwa (fear) of Allah, and to listen and obey [your leader], even if a slave were to become your ameer. Verily he among you who lives long will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Khulafa ar-Rashideen (the rightly guided caliphs), those who guide to the right way. Cling to it stubbornly [literally: with your molar teeth]. Beware of newly invented matters [in the religion], for verily every bidah (innovation) is misguidance.”

[Abu Dawud 4607, Ibn Majah 42] [It was related by at-Tirmidhi 2676, who said that it was a good and sound hadeeth| Hasan Sahih.]

Hadith 22:

Abu Shurayh al-Khuza’i reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

أَبْشِرُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا أَلَيْسَ تَشْهَدُونَ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Rejoice! Do you not witness that there is no God but Allah and I am the messenger of Allah?

They said yes. The Prophet said:

Verily, this Quran is a rope. One end is in the hand of Allah and the other end is in your hands. Hold fast to it, for you will never be lead astray or ruined ever again.

[Mujam At-Tabarani Al-Kabeer 1539, 188, Al-Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaibah 30628]

Hadith 23:

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, addressed the people during the farewell sermon, saying:

Satan has despaired that he will ever be worshiped in your lands. Rather, he is pleased for you to obey him in matters beside that, among your deeds you consider insignificant. Beware, O people! Verily, I have left among you what you must hold firmly to, for you will never be led astray again: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet. Verily, a Muslim is the brother of another Muslim, and the Muslims are brothers. It is not lawful for a man to take the wealth of his brother, unless he gives it freely and willingly. You may not wrong each other. Do not turn back to the ways of unbelievers after me, striking the necks of each other.

When Allah’s Messenger (may peace he upon him) delivered the sermon, his eyes became red, his voice rose, and his anger increased so that he was like one giving a warning against the enemy and saying: “The enemy has made a morning attack on you and in the evening too.” He would also say: “The Last Hour and I have been sent like these two.” And he would join his forefinger and middle finger; and would further say: “The best of the speech is embodied in the Book of Allah, and the best of the guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad. And the most evil affairs are their innovations; and every innovation is error.” He would further say:, I am more dear to a Muslim even than his self; and he who left behind property that is for his family; and he who dies under debt or leaves children (in helplessness), the responsibility (of paying his debt and bringing up his children) lies on me.” Muslim 867, Ibn Majah 25.

So he who does not follow my tradition in religion, is not from me (not one of my followers).

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) asking how the Prophet (ﷺ) worshipped (Allah), and when they were informed about that, they considered their worship insufficient and said, “Where are we from the Prophet (ﷺ) as his past and future sins have been forgiven.” Then one of them said, “I will offer the prayer throughout the night forever.” The other said, “I will fast throughout the year and will not break my fast.” The third said, “I will keep away from the women and will not marry forever.” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) came to them and said, “Are you the same people who said so-and-so? By Allah, I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you; yet I fast and break my fast, I do sleep and I also marry women. Hadith 34:

Mundhir b. Jarir reported on the authority of his father:

While we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in the early hours of the morning, some people came there (who) were barefooted, naked, wearing striped woollen clothes, or cloaks, with their swords hung (around their necks). Most of them, nay, all of them, belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The colour of the face of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) underwent a change when he saw them in poverty. He then entered (his house) and came out and commanded Bilal (to pronounce Adhan). He pronounced Adhan and Iqima, and he (the Holy Prophet) observed prayer (along with his Companion) and then addressed (them reciting verses of the Holy Qur’an): ‘” 0 people, fear your Lord, Who created you from a single being” to the end of the verse,” Allah is ever a Watcher over you” (iv. 1). (He then recited) a verse of Sura Hashr:” Fear Allah. and let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the morrow and fear Allah” (lix. 18). (Then the audience began to vie with one another in giving charity.) Some donated a dinar, others a dirham, still others clothes, some donated a sa’ of wheat, some a sa’ of dates; till he (the Holy Prophet) said: (Bring) even if it is half a date. Then a person from among the Ansar came there with a money bag which his hands could scarcely lift; in fact, they could not (lift). Then the people followed continuously, till I saw two heaps of eatables and clothes, and I saw the face of the Messenger (ﷺ) glistening, like gold (on account of joy). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequently, without any deduction from their rewards; and he who sets in Islam an evil precedent, there is upon him the burden of that, and the burden of him also who acted upon it subsequently, without any deduction from their burden.

Hadith 35:

On the authority of Hudaifa ibn Al-Yaman who said: A man asked (some charity) in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, but the people withheld from him (did not give him anything). Then a man gave him (something), the people also gave (following him).

Thus the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever starts a good act and people follow him (in doing that), for him is his reward and a reward similar of those who followed him, without any reduction in the reward of the ones who followed him (in the good deed).

Whoever starts an evil deed and people follow him (in doing that), for him is his sin and a sin similar of those who followed him, without any reduction in the sin of the ones who followed him (in the evil deed).

Hadith 36:

Ibn Mas’ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah said: “This goodness contains many treasures, and for those there are keys. So glad tidings to the one whom Allah makes a key to good and a lock for evil, and woe to the one whom Allah makes a key to evil and a lock to good.”
