A very recurring problem has appeared regarding Ruqyah Shar‘iyyah. If common people keep asking these questions, that is understandable. But when a student of knowledge, after 3 or 4 years of study, still asks about every ruqyah, “Where is this exact wording? Where is this exact method?” then that is genuinely shocking. This is not some advanced hidden issue — this is from the early lessons of Tawhid: the Qur’an is a healing, Allah alone is the One who cures, and shirk is the red line that can never be crossed.
The hadith of Sahih Muslim 2200 is very clear: A companion said they used to practice ruqyah in the days of Jahiliyyah, so they asked the Prophet ﷺ about it. He did not reject everything outright. He said: “Present your ruqyahs to me. There is no harm in ruqyah so long as it does not involve shirk.” So the main question was about what was actually the Ruqya and if it had/didn’t have Shirk. Not, ‘Was this proven from the Hadith or Sunnah?’
The scholars then explained the conditions of a permissible ruqyah:
1) it must be free from shirk;
2) it should be with the words of Allah, His names, or His attributes;
3) it should be in Arabic or in words whose meaning is clear and understood;
4) one must believe that the ruqyah does not heal by itself, but only by the permission of Allah. Imam Ibn Hajar said there is scholarly agreement on these conditions in Fath al-Bari (10/195) (From Islamqa.info).
So if someone suggests a Ruqya based on his or her experience with a formula, say for example, ‘If you recite Surah Ar-Rahman 10 times after Fajr it’ll help you solve your depression, I’ve experienced it, you may try it too’. Then there’s no problem in acting upon it and trying to benefit from it. However those who’re conveying such formulas must clarify that it is from their or someone else’s experience and not from the Sunnah.
