Compilation of Ahadith from Sahih At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb Part-2

Hadith 13:

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [ The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I fought for you until I died a martyr. He will say: You have lied – you did but fight that it might be said [of you]: He is courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Quran. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I studied [religious] knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Quran for Your sake. He will say: You have lied – you did but study [religious] knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And you recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I left no path [untrodden] in which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake. He will say: You have lied – you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is open-handed. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. It was related by Muslim (also by at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasa’i).

[Sahih Muslim 1905, 40 Hadith Qudsi #6]

Hadith 14:

Narrated Jundub:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real intention (on the Day of Resurrection), and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him).

[Sahih Al-Bukhari 6499]

Hadith 15:

On the authority of Ubai ibn Ka’b whi said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Give glad tidings to this Ummah of easiness, honour, and Rif’ah bid-Deen (highness in The Deen), and empowerment in their nation (bilad) and victory, (and know that) whosoever does an action of the Akhirah for the sake of seeking the Duniyah, he has no share of it (in rewards) in the Akhirah.”
أخرجه أحمد (٢١٢٥٨)، والحاكم (٧٨٦٢)، والبيهقي في «شعب الإيمان» (٦٨٣٣)

Hadith 16:

On the authority of Mu’adh bin Jabal, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no servant (of Allah) who does a deed to be heard of and for showing off except that Allah will expose him (his defects/sins) in front of the creations on the Day of Judgement.

(At-Tabarani Fee Al-Kabeer 237, Sahih Li Ghairihi)

Hadith 17:

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out to us when we were discussing Dajjal (False Christ) and said: ‘Shall I not tell you of that which I fear more for you than Dajjal?’ We said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Hidden polytheism, when a man stands to pray and makes it look good because he sees a man looking at him.’”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 4204, Al-Bayhaqi Fee Shuaib Al-Imaan 6832, Hasan)

Hadith 18:

Mahmud bin Labid narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk (polytheism).”

It was said: “And what is the lesser Shirk O Messenger of Allah?” He ﷺ said: Ar-Riya (showing off in worship). Allah Azzawajal will say when he will reward the people (on the Day of Judgement) for their deeds: Go to those people for whose sake you used to do good deeds in the Dunya, see if you can take your rewards from them!

(Musnad Ahmad 5/427, Al-Bayhaqi in Zuhd 4831, Sahih. )

Hadith 19:

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Allah says: ‘I am the Most Self-Sufficient and I have no need for an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else’s sake as well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to him whom he associated with Me.’”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 4202)

Hadith 20:

On the authority of Abu ‘Ali- a man from Banu Kahil- who said that, Abu Musa Al-Ashari was addressing us one day and he said:

O people! Fear from this Shirk, for it is more hidden than the crawling of ants. (Then) Abdullah ibn Hazan and Qays bin Al-Mudarib stood and said:

By Allah you shall explain this to us or we shall go to Umar with or without seeking permission.

Abu Musa Al-Ashari said: I will explain what I said, the Prophet ﷺ addressed us one day and he said-

O people! Beware of this Shirk. For this is more hidden than the crawling of ants.

So one of whom Allah wished to (ask this question) asked: So how should we save ourselves from this when it id more hidden than the crawling of ants O Messenger of Allah!

(The Prophet ﷺ said:) Say

[ اللَّهمَّ إنّا نعوذُ بِكَ من أن نُشْرِكَ بِكَ شيئًانعلمُهُ،
ونستَغفرُكَ لما لا نعلمُهُ
]

O Allah, we seek refuge with You lest we should commit shirk with You knowingly and we seek Your forgiveness for what we do unknowingly.

[Musnad Ahmad 4/403, Hasan Li Ghairihi]

Compilation of Ahadith from Sahih At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb. Part-1.

(I) Chapters on Ikhlas:

Hadith 1:

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with them) narrated that:
He heard Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: “Three men, amongst those who came before you, set out until night came and they reached a cave, so they entered it. A rock fell down from the mountain and blocked the entrance of the cave. They said: ‘Nothing will save you from this unless you supplicate to Allah by virtue of a righteous deed you have done.’ Thereupon, one of them said: ‘O Allah! I had parents who were old, and I used to offer them milk before any of my children or slaves. One day, I went far away in search of grazing and could not come back until they had slept. When I milked as usual and brought the drink I found them both asleep. I hated to disturb them and also disliked to give milk to my children before them. My children were crying out of hunger at my feet but I awaited with the bowl in my hand for them to wake up. When they awoke at dawn, they drank milk. O Allah! If I did so to seek Your Pleasure, then deliver us from the distress caused by the rock’. The rock moved slightly but they were unable to escape. The next said: ‘O Allah! I had a cousin whom I loved more than any one else (in another version he said: as a man can love a woman). I wanted to have sexual intercourse with her but she refused. Hard pressed in a year of famine, she approached me. I gave her one hundred and twenty dinars on condition that she would yield herself to me. She agreed and when we got together (for sexual intercourse), she said: Fear Allah and do not break the seal unlawfully. I moved away from her in spite of the fact that I loved her most passionately; and I let her keep the money I had given her. O Allah! If I did that to seek Your Pleasure, then, remove the distress in which we are.’ The rock moved aside a bit further but they were still unable to get out. The third one said: ‘O Allah! I hired some labourers and paid them their wages except one of them departed without taking his due. I invested his money in business and the business prospered greatly. After a long time, he came to me and said: O slave of Allah! Pay me my dues. I said: All that you see is yours – camels, cattle, goats and slaves. He said: O slave of Allah! Do not mock at me. I assured him that I was not joking. So he took all the things and went away. He spared nothing. O Allah! If I did so seeking Your Pleasure, then relieve us of our distress.’ The rock slipped aside and they got out walking freely”.

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim| Riyadh-us-Saliheen, Book 1, #12].

Hadith 2:

Narrated ‘Abdul-Malik bin ‘Umair:

from ‘Abdur-Rahman bin ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud that he narrated from his father, from the Prophet (ﷺ) who said: “May Allah beautify a man who hears a saying of mine, so he understands it, remembers it, and conveys it. Perhaps he carries the Fiqh to one who has more understanding than him. There are three with which the heart of a Muslim shall not be deceived. Sincerity in deeds for Allah, giving Nasihah to the A’immah of Muslims, and sticking to the Jama’ah. For indeed the call is protected from behind them.”

[Wordings here are from Jaami’ At-Tirmidhi 2658, Musnad Al-Bazzar 3629, 141, Hasan Li Ghairihi]

Hadith 3:
It was narrated from Mus’ab bin Sa’d, from his father, that he thought he was better than other Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Rather, Allah support this Ummah because of their supplication, their Salah, and their sincerity.”

[Sunan An-Nasai 3178, Sahih]

Hadith 4:

Al-Dahhak reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ أَنَا خَيْرُ شَرِيكٍ فَمَنْ أَشْرَكَ مَعِيَ شَرِيكًا فَهُوَ لِشَرِيكِي

Allah Almighty says: I am the best partner. Whoever associates another partner with me, it is only done for the sake of my partner.

Then, the Prophet said:

O people, make your deeds sincere for Allah Almighty. Verily, Allah does not accept any deed unless it is sincerely for him. Do not say: This is for the sake of Allah, and this is for the sake of my relatives. Verily, it was done for your relatives and none of it was for Allah. Do not say: This is for the sake of Allah and for your sake. Verily, it was done for their sake and none of it was for Allah.

It was narrated that Abu ‘Umamah Al-Bahili said:
“A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘What do you think of a man who fights seeking reward and fame – what will he have?’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘He will not have anything.’ He repeated it three times, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said to him: ‘He will not have anything.’ Then he said: ‘Allah does not accept any deed, except that which is purely for Him, and seeking His Face.'”

Hadith 6:

Narrated `Umar bin Al-Khattab:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The (reward of) deeds depend on intentions, and every person will get the reward according to what he intends. So, whoever migrated for Allah and His Apostle, then his migration will be for Allah and His Apostle, and whoever migrated for worldly benefits or for marrying a woman, then his migration will be for what he migrated for.”

(Wordings from Sahih Al-Bukhari, also in Sahih Muslim 1907, Sunan Abi Dawud 2201, Jaami’ At-Tirmidhi 1647, Sunan An-Nasai 75)

Hadith 7:

Anas bin Malik reported on the authority of his father, The Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) said “ You left behind some people in Madeenah who did not fail to be with you wherever you went and whatever you spent (of your goods) and whatever valley you crossed. They asked Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) how can they be with us when they are still in Madeenah? He replied “They were declined by a valid excuse.”

(Sunan Abu Dawud 2508, Sahih)

Hadith 8:

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “People will be resurrected (and judged) according to their intentions.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 4229, Sahih Li Ghairihi)
Hadith 9:

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Verily Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your heart and to your deeds.(And he pointed his fingers towards his heart).

Sahih Muslim 2564.
Hadith 10:

Abu Kabshah Al-Anmari narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:
“There are three things for which I swear and narrate to you about, so remember it.” He said: “The wealth of a slave (of Allah) shall not be decreased by charity, no slave (of Allah) suffers injustice and is patient with it except that Allah adds to his honor; no slave (of Allah) opens up a door to begging except that Allah opens a door for him to poverty”- or a statement similar- “And I shall narrate to you a narration, so remember it.” He said: “The world is only for four persons: A slave whom Allah provides with wealth and knowledge, so he has Taqwa of his Lord with it, nurtures the ties of kinship with it, and he knows that Allah has a right in it. So this is the most virtuous rank. And a slave whom Allah provides with knowledge, but He does not provide with wealth. So he has a truthful intent, saying: ‘If I had wealth, then I would do the deeds of so-and-so with it.’ He has his intention, so their rewards are the same. And a slave whom Allah provides with wealth, but He does not provide him with knowledge. [So he] spends his wealth rashly without knowledge, nor having Taqwa of his Lord, nor nurturing the ties of kinship, and he does not know that Allah has a right in it. So this is the most despicable rank. And a slave whom Allah does not provide with wealth nor knowledge, so he says: ‘If I had wealth, then I would do the deeds of so-and-so with it.’ He has his intention, so their sin is the same.”

[Jaami At-Tirmidhi 2325, Musnad Ahmad, Sahih Li Ghairihi]
Hadith 11:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah says, ‘If My slave intends to do a bad deed then (O Angels) do not write it unless he does it; if he does it, then write it as it is, but if he refrains from doing it for My Sake, then write it as a good deed (in his account). (On the other hand) if he intends to do a good deed, but does not do it, then write a good deed (in his account), and if he does it, then write it for him (in his account) as ten good deeds up to seven-hundred times.’ “

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 7501)

Hadith 12:

It was narrated from Abu Ad-Darda’ who attributed it to the Prophet (ﷺ):

“Whoever goes to his bed intending to get up and pray qiyam at night, then sleep overwhelms him until morning, will have recorded that which he intended and his sleep is a charity given to him by his Lord, the Mighty and Sublime.”

Ahadith which show that drinking water while standing is permissible (Halal):

Al-Bukhaari (1637) and Muslim (2027) narrated that Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I brought water to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) from Zamzam and he drank whilst standing.

Al-Bukhaari (5615) narrated from ‘Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he drank whilst standing then he said: Some people say it is makrooh for one of you to drink whilst standing, but I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) doing what you have seen me do.

Ahmad (797) narrated that ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allaah be pleased with him) drank whilst standing, and the people looked at him as if they objected to that. He said: “What are you looking at? If I drink whilst standing, I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) drink whilst standing, and if I drink sitting, I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) drink whilst sitting.” Ahmad Shaakir said in Tahqeeq al-Musnad: its isnaad is saheeh.

Al-Tirmidhi (1881) narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “We used to eat at the time of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) whilst walking, and we used to drink whilst standing.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

There is a difference of opinion between the scholars on this issue:

Group 1: Says that drinking water sitting is Wajib (obligatory) and standing is permissible only during a necessity. Ex. Shaikh Al-Albani in our times, Imam Ibn Hazm in the past and some other Ulama held this view.

Group 2: Both standing and sitting while drinking water is proven from the Prophet ﷺ and the Sahaba. Majority of the scholars held this opinion as well as some of the Sahaba as we have seen above.

What is the safest opinion?

The opnion of group 1 is safer. The opinion of group 2 is based on the actions of some of the senior Sahaba and hence is not invalid.

How should we practice drinking water now?

Follow what you feel is closer to the truth and don’t criticise the other end. As this issue is from the valid Ijtehadi differences.

What seems to be the truth is that perhaps it was prohibited initially, but in the later stages of the Prophet’s blessed life it was made permissible as the senior Sahaba like Ali (رضي الله عنه) and Ibn Umar (رضي الله عنه) allowed both. And Allah knows the best.

Playing With Games Involving Dice Is Haram!

● Yahya related to me from Malik from Alqama from his mother that A’isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, heard that the people who lived in a room in her house had some dice. She sent a message to them, “If you do not remove them, I will remove you from my house,” and she reproached them for it.

(Muwatta Imam Malik, الألباني (١٤٢٠ هـ)، صحيح الأدب المفرد ٩٦١ • حسن الإسناد موقوفا )

●Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As said, “Someone who plays dice for a bet is like a person who eats pig meat. Someone who plays it without betting is like someone who washes his hands in pig’s blood.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1277, the chain is Sahih Mawqoof (authentic statement from a Sahabi) according to Shaikh Al-Albani. )

●Narrated AbuMusa al-Ash’ari:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: He who plays dice ( alternate translation: backgammon) disobeys Allah and His Apostle.

●Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that when he found one of his family playing dice he beat him and destroyed the dice.

Yahya said that he heard Malik say, “There is no good in chess, and he disapproved of it.” Yahya said, “I heard him disapprove of playing it and other worthless games. He recited this ayat, ‘What is there after the truth except going the wrong way.’ ” (Sura l0 ayat 32).

(Muwatta Imam Malik, Book 52, Hadith 7, The narration from Abdullah ibn Umar has come from a *Golden Chain*, thus Sahih.)
